Renal Tract & Bladder Ultrasound

A renal tract scan would be routinely utilised to look for conditions associated with the kidneys and bladder such as hypertension, polycystic kidneys, hydronephrosis, bladder retention as well as other pathologies associated with the renal tract.

Anatomy Examined

Male renal tract: Kidneys, Bladder and Prostate. Female renal tract: Kidneys, Bladder, (Uterus and Ovaries commented on if visualised) Including Post void bladder if requested.

Preparing for your Renal Tract Ultrasound

A full bladder is required to undertake the scan, so please drink 1-2 pints of water 1 hour prior to your scan.

You will need to expose your abdomen and pelvis as the ultrasound requires skin contact with the probe, so please wear loose fitting clothing.

If you are already due an ultrasound as part of your current healthcare pathway please consult your GP prior to making an appointment to ensure your scan is needed and does not conflict with your current NHS provision
