Background to independent non-obstetric (not baby scans) ultrasound services (NOUS) working in partnership with the NHS
As a result of an initiative led by the Government and supported by the NHS to find ways to provide diagnostic services locally for local people, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG’s), who oversee NHS services, were enabled to offer out contract bids for private sector providers to work in partnership with the NHS to provide diagnostic services in the community that had costs of scans the same as charged by hospitals to the CCG’s, therefore not incurring any increase in costs to the NHS, all tariffs (costs per scan type) are set by national tariffs.
The contract compliance criteria ensured that only competent, professional, and safe services were awarded a contract to provide a locally based diagnostic facility overseen by the CQC and other regulatory bodies. The advantages of these services are that patients did not have far to travel, all patients will be offered an appointment within 10-20 days of referral being received from their GP’s, and that GP’s can expect to receive the scan report within 24 to 48 hours after the scan.
What is the catchment area for NHS referrals to H.E.M.?
We have CCG contracts that cover all of West Kent up to the Sussex border, contracts with Swale, and Medway.
H.E.M. Clinical Ultrasound Service LTD
We were awarded our first NOUS contract on 1st April 2015, since then we have grown as a company from just having 1 scan room and very few staff to having 3 scan rooms running up to 6 days per week with an ever-growing number of staff.
We currently average 1000 scans per month. We perform all type of non-obstetric scans, from abdominal scans that assess internal organs such as the Liver, to Musculoskeletal (MSK) scans that look at joints and soft tissue.
